diploma work in architecture

I finished my diploma work a year ago and have done nothing with this since. I have heardly done anything of this kind at all. I just don’t seem to have had the energy. But I am hoping and wishing that I am ready for the next step.

When I look at the outcome of the diploma work I am overall pleased with it. Some parts are better other lack work and attention.

Some parts I can see that I lost along the way. Like the fluidity in the skin but the plans I nailed in the end. They just make me smile.

If I had the energy I would continue with the project but I will set my energy for something new. Finally I would be able to set my own agenda.

Now it is just time for production. Which is the reason why I havn’t posted any new stuff lately.

I handed in the boards for printing yesterday and today I am finishing the report the the jury.

after setting up the pillars in teh last model I was far from happy.. They ruined it and was just bad design and bad just over all.. I also relised that i was not happy with the box to the wast.. for some reason it did not work.. so I have gotten rid of them.. both the pillars and the box. and also kept on working with making the plans more dynamic.. And step by step it is getting closer..

this is the next step into having my final plans… hmm sounds very far away at the moment.. but I hope if I take a step back they are getting closer to the end..

I have set a fixed setting for lineweights and linetypes in autocad and they look fine when I open them as pdfs but when I open them in Illustrator it is all gone.. But I don’t want to spend more time on the lineweights now I have decided to keep them as they come out of Auto cad… After another couple of hours in trying to keep the lineweight I surrender to the programs for today… no more..

I post my inspiration in approaching my metal stairs in the center of the building..

Now I am just a bit too tired to come up with something smart to write so I settle with that these images that follow are small renderings done to see how the opening can work from both in- and outside.. In the model now they are to thick and a bit uncontroled and needs more thinking from the start in the modeling process..

There has been some changes since I last showed the plans.. At the moment I can’t really remember them all.. today I have been working on the staircase to make it fireproof and integrated it to the rest of the building..

the second floor still has a lot of work missing.. but one step along the way..

And the last but not the least.. third floor.. there is something wrong where this floor meets the balcony.. but I need to be clearer in my head to work it out…

neither me or the dogs have been out yet and they are still not moving.. Both of them are laying on the floor looking very pleased.. but now I will push them out of the door.

the elevations seems a bit hard to read at the moment.. but they are there .. the first draft.. I have had a lot of issues concerning the preforation of the metal panels.. the way they are constructed at the reference building does not allow me to do what I do now… but I am sure there is another way of attaching them. So now I have gone for the design that i want and not the construction.

this is the north elevation. It has concrete bands enclosing the inner activities, with corten iron panels perforated with the pattern shown on the drawing.. This will be the elevation that is facing the street and the first thing the visitors encounter by the center.

next elevation is the one facing the water and the canal.. it has two balconies facing the water.. One leading direct out of the main restaurant and the other for the third floor. exclusive for the participants of the center..

the next two are where the enclousure can be read the clearest.. Here the enclosing and growing band is the most obvious aloud to run more coherent.

here it is also clear that the additional recantgual volumes are treated different in elevation as well.. I have chosen on the dancing car workshop to use simple metall bars as a raster for the sun since it is a exposed elevation. I also use the top part of them for bringing in daylight and allowing sightlines across the center..

The last elevation is facing the existing buildings with grading from calm to busy in the elevation. The big part that has neither perforation or concrete shall be glass, providing a back drop for the performing cold kitchen and also connecting the inner with the patio and the water in the background and the change in shape also defines the patio .

Now I need to take the dogs out for a evening pee… Not that they seem to mind at the moment but it was far to long since they were out.. they are just to old ladies chosing the couch over a nice walk in the cold dark night..

In my next step in closing the building I have added concrete. see the previous post..

as part of the process in exploring how I should deal with the enclosing band I lasercutted my draft in order to see in a fysical model how it relates. In the following pictures you can see how they also look different in the two sides.. The one on the right hand side in the small models deals with how the additional volumes should be treated. Are they just something that has been hung to the other body or is it a volume that interfere with the existing?

I am back home… and it seems as if I have not updated the site as much as I did before. Probably because the “target” for the blog is at the same spot as me, which means I can show my stuff in real life..

plans and sections have improved a lot since last. and now I have started on my statement in order to get it toghether in time.

so here is the first short draft for my statement

In my progress with the building I continued to explore how I could find a way to relate my skin to my inner program. In doing so I started with a wrapping. Just simply wrapp the building with a free roof that covers the inside on basically all sides..
